Solid pitching, timely hitting and a Tebow RBI in Fireflies’ win
Jordan Humphreys hasn’t needed many runs to work with this season but the Columbia Fireflies gave him plenty Tuesday.
The Fireflies scored in each of the first three innings and Humphreys turned in another gem in the 8-2 win over Augusta GreenJackets at Spirit Communications Park.
It was Columbia’s second consecutive big offensive game. The Fireflies scored a franchise-record 14 runs Monday and scored eight runs over the first three innings Tuesday.
“We came back from a road trip where we didn’t score a lot of runs,” Columbia manager Jose Leger said. “Yesterday the bats came alive and when you start hitting it is contagious.”
The run support was plenty for Humphreys, who recorded his South Atlantic League-best eighth win of the year. The right-hander allowed an unearned run and two hits over six innings, striking out eight.
Humphreys has struck out at least six batters in eight of his nine starts.
“He has been so consistent and impressive,” Leger said. “Every time he is on the mound, he is on a mission and doesn’t let things affect him.”
Eight of the Fireflies starters had at least one hit, including Tim Tebow. The Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL quarterback snapped out of an 0-for-13 slump with an RBI double in the second inning.
Andres Gimenez had two hits including a two-run triple and Milton Ramos added two hits. Gene Cone and Dash Winningahm also drove in a run. Winningham has 13 RBIs over his last six games.
“Last couple weeks I have been locked in and swinging the bat well and I will try to keep it going,” Winningham said.
Columbia will go for a sweep of the three-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Merandy Gonzalez (6-1, 1.75) gets the start for the Firefliesagainst Melvin Adon (0-4, 3.98).
