Gimenez’s hot bat sparks Fireflies to series victory
Andres Gimenez had three hits and scored three runs as the Columbia Fireflies defeated the Kannapolis Intimidators 9-2 on Tuesday.
Columbia, which won three of four games in the series, started the scoring in the first inning when J.J. Franco scored on a ground out and Jacob Zanon hit an RBI single.
After Columbia added three runs in the third, but the Intimidators cut into the deficit in the bottom of the inning.
The Fireflies added four runs in the fourth to finish off the blowout.
Taylor Henry (3-0) tossed four innings of scoreless, three-hit relief. He followed starting pitcher Blake Taylor, who exited after 37 pitches in two innings, but couldn’t get an out in the third.
Columbia all-star first baseman Dash Winningham also came out after two innings, grounding out in his lone at-bat.
The Fireflies play next Thursday at Spirit Communications Park against the Augusta GreenJackets.
