Fireflies’ bullpen can’t hold lead in loss to Augusta
Carlos Garcia scored on an error in the ninth inning to help the Augusta GreenJackets secure a 6-5 victory over the Columbia Fireflies at Spirit Communications Park on Friday.
Columbia had a runner on first in the bottom of the ninth, but Ian Strom hit into a forceout to end the game.
Garcia’s run capped a two-run inning and gave the GreenJackets a 6-5 lead.
Jose Vizcaino Jr. hit an RBI single in the third inning to give the GreenJackets a 4-2 lead. The Fireflies came back to take a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning when Luis Carpio hit an RBI double and scored on a wild pitch.
Patrick Ruotolo (3-2) got the win with two innings of scoreless, one-hit relief while Matt Pobereyko (1-1) took the loss.
Andres Gimenez singled twice, also stealing a base for Columbia. Brandon Brosher homered and singled, driving in two runs.
The teams play again on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
