Two former Columbia Fireflies players traded to Miami Marlins

Former Columbia Fireflies Merandy Gonzlaez and Ricardo Cespedes were traded to the Miami Marlins organization late Friday night.

The New York Mets sent the two players to the Marlins in exchanged for Miami relief pitcher A.J. Ramos.

Gonzalez, the ninth ranked prospect in the Mets’ system, was 8-1 with the Fireflies with a 1.55 ERA and was a South Atlantic League All-Star selection before being promoted to St. Lucie. He began the season by throwing 28 1/3 scoreless innings.

At St. Lucie, he was 4-2 with a 2.23 ERA in six starts.

Cespedes, the 22nd-ranked prospects in the Mets’ system, played five games with the Fireflies and hit .412. He was with the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Mets’ shortseason affiliate.
