After MLB scandal, Columbia-area youth baseball league is dropping ‘Astros’ name

The sign-stealing scandal engulfing the Houston Astros is even impacting a Columbia-area Little League.

On Thursday, Trenholm Little League announced it would be dropping the “Astros” name and likenesses from any league teams or material in the upcoming season.

The decision is a response to the scandal that has already led the American League pennant winners to fire their manager and general manager. Major League Baseball investigators determined the Houston team used video surveillance to systematically steal the signs of opposing teams during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, including during the Astros’ run to a World Series title in 2017.

“Trenholm Little League baseball and softball programs are designed to develop great citizens rather than great athletes,” the Little League chapter said in a news release. “As a league, we feel it would be inappropriate as a good example to our youth to carry the name of the Astros on any of our league teams, baseball or softball.”
