Champs! Lexington County Blowfish baseball wins league title

The Lexington County Blowfish used some late-inning heroics to capture the Coastal Plain League’s Petit Cup championship on Saturday night.

Former Gilbert High standout Ashby Vining drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-run single in the eighth inning as the Blowfish defeated Wilmington, 7-5, in the deciding game of the best-of-three series.

Columbia dropped the first game of the series on Thursday but forced the deciding game with a 7-4 win on Friday.

Vining was 2-for-4 with a homer run and four RBIs. River Bluff’s Zach Cowart added two hits and an RBI. Dariyan Pendergrass had two hits and two runs scored. Warren Holzemer and Ty Jackson each drove in a run.

The Blowfish led 5-2 after four innings before Wilmington scored three in the top of the seventh.

Lexington County loaded the bases in the eighth after three straight walks to begin the inning. With one out, Vining singled to score Ryan Outz and Zander Buchan and made it 7-5.

CJ Czerwinski pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the save. Robbie Jordan got the win in relief for Lexington.
