Hawkins leads Newberry-Chapin past Rowan

Justin Hawkins drove in five runs, including the game-winning double in the top of the ninth, to give Newberry-Chapin a 6-5 win over Rowan (N.C.) on Thursday at the American Legion Southeast Regional.

Newberry-Chapin improves to 25-0 and will play the Tuscaloosa-Randolph County winner in a winner’s bracket game Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Hawkins belted a pair of two-run homers in the fourth and sixth innings as Newberry-Chapin jumped to a 4-0 lead. Rowan scored four in the bottom of the sixth to tie it at 4.

Danton Hyman gave Newberry-Chapin a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth with a solo homer. Rowan responded with Juan Garcia’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to tie it at 5.
