Newberry-Chapin earns spot in championship
Newberry-Chapin’s unbeaten season and run in the American Legion Southeast Regional continued Friday.
Blake Smith’s bunt single scored Danton Hyman in the bottom of the fifth as Post 193/24 defeated host Randolph County (N.C.) 3-2 at McCrary Park. With the win, Newberry-Chapin improves to 26-0 and clinches a spot in Sunday’s title game.
Post 193/24 will play Saturday at 7:30 p.m, but will play for the championship even if it loses because it is the only team in the tournament not to lose yet. The winner of the Southeast Regional advances to the American Legion World Series in Shelby, N.C. on Aug. 13-18.
All three of Newberry-Chapin’s victories in the tournament are by one run.
Ryan Stoudemire pitched a complete game for Newberry-Chapin. He allowed eight hits, two earned runs, walked two and stuck out six.
Smith was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Justin Hawkins was 2-for-4 for Post 193/24.
