Chapin-Newberry rallies for spot in American Legion World Series title game
Chapin-Newberry’s comeback kids did it again.
Danton Hyman’s squeeze bunt with two outs in the top of the ninth helped Chapin-Newberry to a 4-3 victory over Oregon on Monday at the American Legion World Series. The win earned Post 193/24 a spot in Tuesday’s championship game at 7 p.m. against Louisiana. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
Post 193/24 is the first team from South Carolina to make it to the championship game since 1938. Spartanburg was the last team from South Carolina to win it all in 1936.
For the second day in a row, C-N needed a late rally. Post 193/24 scored six runs in the eighth Sunday to defeat Connecticut 7-6 to earn a spot in the semifinals. On Monday, C-N trailed 3-2 going into the ninth before starting its comeback.
With one out, Chapin-Newberry (31-1) got consecutive singles from Landon Allison, Duncan Crotwell and Blake Smith to load the bases. Dutch Fork’s Zach Ziesing then tied it with a sacrifice fly to score Allison to make it 3-3.
Hyman dropped a squeeze bunt that scored Crotwell, who advanced to third on Ziesing’s sacrifice fly, for the deciding run.
Patrick Yoder pitched a perfect ninth inning to get the save for Peyton Spangler, who picked up the win after allowing one run on two hits in two innings of relief. C-N starter Kevis Burton went the first six innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts.
Spangler and Crotwell each had two hits to lead C-N. Justin Hawkins added a solo homer. It was Hawkins’ second straight game with a homer, and he has two of the three homers hit in the World Series.
Admission to the championship will be free after North Carolina natives Charles and Betty Carrigan bought all the tickets for Tuesday’s title game.
