Fireflies hold on to split doubleheader

Kevin Canelon and Alex Palsha combined on a three-hitter as Columbia defeated Greensboro 2-1 in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday night.

Greensboro (9-19) won the first game 5-2.

Columbia (15-13) managed two hits in the second game, but were able to score two runs in the third inning.

Vicente Lupo scored when David Thompson reached on an error by shortstop Anfernee Seymour. J.C. Rodriguez later scored on a sacrifice fly by Dash Winningham.

Canelon (2-1) gave up one hit and struck out seven in five innings to pick up the win. Palsha gave up one run and two hits in two innings for his second save. Cody Poteet (1-3) took the loss, giving up one hit and two runs (one earned) in five innings.

The doubleheader was a result of Thursday’s game being rained out. Both games were seven innings.

In the first game, Fireflies scored a run in the top of the first on a Thompson single, which scored Emmanuel Zabata. However, Greensboro answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Columbia tied the game in the second when Ivan Wilson scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Moore.

Greensboro scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Isael Soto singled in Angel Reyes. Soto then scored on a single by Roy Morales, who ended up taking third on a throwing error by Zabala. Moreables then scored on a wild pitch by starter Thomas McIlrath.

McIlrath (1-2) took the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits in six innings. Ben Holmes (3-0) picked up the win, pitching four shutout innings in relief.
