Drive edge Fireflies

Joseph Monge’s RBI double in the bottom of the sixth pushed Greenville past Columbia 5-4 on Sunday at Fluor Field.

The Drive (16-14) struck early with runs in the first and second to take a 2-0 lead.

The Fireflies (15-14) went ahead in the top of the third behind an RBI single from Vinny Siena, and a two-run double from Dash Winningham.

However, Greenville regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third before Columbia tied it in the fourth.

Jake Cosart (1-1) picked up the win, pitching 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Bobby Poyner pitched the seventh inning for his sixth save.

Joe Shaw (2-2) took the loss, giving up nine hits and five runs in 5 2/3 innings.

The game went seven innings because Saturday’s game had been suspended in the bottom of the fifth because of a power issue in the left-field light tower.

That game was completed earlier in the day with Columbia winning 13-3.

The Fireflies scored four runs in the fifth inning on a Jeff Diehl grand slam to break the game open.

Greenville scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth after the game resumed, but the Fireflies tacked on two runs in the sixth and six runs in the seventh.

Johnny Magliozzi (2-1) got the win, giving up two runs in one inning of relief.

Logan Boyd (3-2) took the loss for Greenville.

The teams play on Monday at 7:05 p.m. at Fluor Field.
