Ex-USC pitcher lifts Asheville past Columbia
Yonathan Daza had and an RBI single in the fourth, and Asheville held off Columbia for a 3-2 win on Friday night at Spirit Communications Park.
Former South Carolina standout Jack Wynkoop (4-1) picked up the win for the Tourists (16-16), giving up seven hits and two runs over six innings. He struck out five. Sam Thoele notched his eighth save, pitching a scoreless ninth.
Kevin Canelon (2-2) took the loss for the Fireflies (18-16), giving up three runs (two earned) in seven innings. He struck out six and walked none.
Asheville struck in the first two innings, thanks to a Brian Mundell sacrifice fly in the first. Sam Hilliard had a sacrifice fly in the second to give the Tourists a 2-0 lead. Asheville went up 3-0 in the fourth on Daza’s single.
The Fireflies got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run from Dash Winningham.
