Braves power past Fireflies
Columbia scored the first, but Rome tied it in the second and broke it open in the eighth for a 5-1 win over the Fireflies on Monday night at Spirit Communications Park.
Kevin Kaczmarski scored on a David Thompson sacrifice fly in the first to put the Fireflies (19-18) up front. However, Rome (14-23) tied it when Juan Yepez scored on an error by J.C. Rodriguez.
The Braves went ahead in the eighth on an RBI double by Jonathan Morales. Yepez then added a two-run home run. Later in the inning, Justin Ellison scored on an error by shortstop Milton Ramos.
Rome’s win came one night after the team won a 19-inning contest.
Matt Custred (1-1) picked up the win, pitching three scoreless innings in relief. Johnny Magliozzi took the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) in 2/3 inning. Columbia starter Chase Ingram pitched seven innings, giving up four hits and one run (unearned).
