Widener tops Fireflies for his first pro win
Dash Winningham slammed his fourth home run in the past six days on Wednesday night, but Columbia fell to Charleston, 4-1.
Columbia starting pitcher Andrew Church (5-2) gave up a run in the first, then cruised through the sixth. The righty from Las Vegas allowed just four hits over his seven innings of work.
Winningham hit his 11th homer of the season on the top of the seventh, blasting a shot over the right-field fence off South Carolina product and Aiken native Taylor Widener (1-0). Widener allowed one more hit and no runs, striking out five in three innings.
Charleston retook the lead in the home half of the seventh inning and never looked back. Luis De Los Santos logged a scoreless inning of relief in his Fireflies’ debut.
First pitch for Thursday’s game is set for 7:05 p.m.
