Darlington Raceway to honor SC native, ‘Black Panther’ star Chadwick Boseman
Darlington Raceway’s tributes won’t be limited to just NASCAR this weekend.
The track also will pay tribute to SC native Chadwick Boseman. The track will honor the late movie star with with initials CB (1976-2020) painted in black and white along the frontstretch.
“We are humbled to honor Anderson, SC native Chadwick Boseman this weekend at Darlington Raceway,” the track posted on its Twitter page.
Boseman died last Friday after a a four-year battle with colon cancer.
The TL Hanna grad portrayed King T’Challa in Marvel’s superhero blockbuster “Black Panther” and real-life icons Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall and James Brown in other films.
Billboards paying tribute to Boseman were seen throughout South Carolina, with “five or six” in the Columbia area.
Since Boseman’s deaths, tributes have poured in from across the state. Gov. Henry McMaster ordered flags at the State House to be flown at half-staff in his honor, and a petition to replace a Confederate memorial in Anderson with a statue of Boseman has garnered more than 18,000 signatures.
NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace and F1 driver Lewis Hamilton posted tributes to Boseman on social media last week. Hamilton dedicated his pole and win last week to Boseman.
“We are continuing to push the envelope, and it feels great to finish on a high this weekend, particularly with Chad (Chadwick Boseman) dying because he made everyone feel like a superhero,” Hamilton said after the race.
Darlington will host three races this weekend beginning with Saturday’s SportClips Haircuts VFW 200 Xfinity Series race.
The Cook Out Southern 500 will be Sunday at 6 p.m. It is the first race of the Cup Series playoffs and NASCAR’s throwback weekend honoring past racing legends.
