Chase Elliott became the sixth rookie to win the pole for the Daytona 500 with a lap of 196.314 mph Sunday at Daytona International Speedway.

Elliott, 20, is also the youngest driver to ever win the 500 pole. He is joined by Toyota-driving Matt Kenseth on the front row for NASCAR’s season-opening race next week. Kenseth’s lap of 196.036 mph edged Dale Earnhardt Jr., who was third fastest at 195.682.

The remainder of the field will be set Thursday in the Can-Am Duel qualifying races.

Elliott, the son of NASCAR hall-of-famer Bill Elliott, is replacing the retired Jeff Gordon in Hendrick Motorsports’ No. 24 Chevrolet.

Martin Truex Jr. was not allowed to qualify after a roof flap violation was discovered by NASCAR officials before his run. Truex, who was one of the final four drivers in last season’s Chase, will start at the rear of the field in one of Thursday’s duel races.
