Midlands 3-year-old and mother killed in head-on crash with tractor trailer

A mother and her 3-year-old son were killed in a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer Friday morning in West Columbia.

The crash happened around 9 a.m. Friday in the 2000 block of Old Dunbar Road, according to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher.

The driver, Mesia Alonda Johnson, 22, of Leesville, crossed the center line and collided head-on with an oncoming tractor-trailer, Fisher said.

Johnson died at the scene.

Her only passenger, her 3-year-old son, Cavon Cannon, was taken to a hospital, where he died of injuries sustained during the crash, according to the coroner.

Johnson was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, but her son was not restrained, Fisher said.
