Second body found in Lake Wylie

Less than two hours after crews pulled the body of a Camp Thunderbird counselor from Lake Wylie on Monday morning, a second body was pulled from the water near River Hills Marina, according to the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.

The body was found near River Hills Marina, said Brett Witt, a DNR spokesman. He referred questions to the York County Coroner’s Office.

York County Coroner Sabrina Gast could not be reached immediately Monday morning.

Lake Wylie resident Brett Kina said he found the man’s body at 6 a.m. while he was fishing near the marina.

“I was walking toward the back of the marina and noticed something in the water,” he said. “It looked like something larger than what you would see floating in the water.”

Kina said he went closer and realized it was a person floating about 15 feet from shore. The man appeared to be in his late 40s or early 50s and was fully clothed, he said.

Kina, who just moved to the area recently, said he saw the man at the community swimming pool Sunday night.

“He was swimming at the pool about 5:30 last night, and was a strong swimmer from what I could see,” he said.

Crews on Monday morning were also investigating the drowning of a 19-year-old Camp Thunderbird counselor, whose body was found in Lake Wylie about 4:30 a.m. after he and another counselor reportedly jumped from the Buster Boyd Bridge about 2 a.m.

Both cases come barely a week after a 64-year-old York woman drowned at a popular sandbar spot for boaters on the lake.

Check back later for more details.
