Columbia firefighters, HAZMAT secure ammonia leak at Bluff Road plant

Columbia firefighters and HAZMAT crews responded to a gas leak at the Tyson processing plant on Bluff Road early Friday morning.

Brick Lewis, a Columbia Fire Department spokesman, said firefighters responded to the 1900 block of Bluff Road after receiving reports of a potential ammonia leak inside the building. When crews entered the building, they were able to detect an ammonia leak coming from a container inside of the building.

Lewis said a few minutes the ammonia leak had dissipated, and crews were able to secure the leak. A separate company has been called in to fix the problem.

There were no injuries reported from the incident, but the building was closed for a brief time.
