One killed in head-on collision with tractor trailer in Kershaw County
South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a fiery crash that killed one Tuesday morning on U.S. Highway 1 near the town of Cassatt, officials say.
Lance Cpl. David Jones, a highway patrol spokesman, said the collision occurred just before 12 p.m. when a motorist driving an SUV was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 1 and drove off the right side of the roadway before over correcting. The driver then struck a northbound tractor-trailer carrying a logs head on.
Jones said following the collision, the SUV caught on fire. The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene and was not transported to a hospital. It is unclear at this time of the investigation if the SUV’s driver was wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the tractor trailer was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision and was not transported to a hospital, Jones said.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased individual after next-of-kin has been notified, Jones said.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol will continue to investigate the incident.
