Shaw Air Force Base officials said that a fighter pilot was forced to jettison two external fuel tanks over an unpopulated area in South Carolina during a training mission Wednesday afternoon.
Col. William Jones, the 20th Fighter Wing vice commander, said at 12:30 p.m. an F-16C from the 20th Fighter Wing was flying over North, S.C. when the pilot experienced an in-flight emergency.
After following checklist procedures to identify the problem, Jones said the pilot jettisoned two 370-gallon external fuel tanks over an unpopulated area. Jones said the pilot was then able to land the plane safely at North Auxiliary Airfield.
Jones said there were no injuries reported, and the incident will be investigated.
