THE SOUP CELLAR at Washington Street United Methodist Church is asking for the community’s help in donating backpacks for the men and women served there. Personal hygiene packets for men and women, as well as socks, underwear and clothes are needed. SALVATION ARMY in Columbia is accepting applications for Christmas assistance at the Ruff Building on the State Fairgrounds, 1200 Rosewood Drive, Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. the first day and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. the rest of the days. People applying for assistance will need to bring picture ID for the head of the household, ID for everyone in the household, proof of age for children 12 years and younger, EBT card and receipts from grocery purchase within the last 90 days if the household qualifies for SNAP, proof of all income in the home for the past 30 days, proof of zero wage for those 18 and older with no income and proof of household expenses paid in the last 30 days. Children will not be allowed in the fairground buildings during registration or distribution. SPIRIT OF TRUTH CHRISTIAN CHURCH is giving away water, canned goods and clothes for residents affected by the Oct. 4 flood. Items are available for pickup at the church, 4201 Abingdon Road, Mondays and Tuesdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and Wednesdays 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. through Dec. 31. Donations can also be dropped off at the church.
