Richland 2 postpones trips to Washington, D.C., after Paris attacks

Richland 2 School District officials have postponed trips to Washington, D.C., by students at two schools. The move follows threats from ISIS that the terrorist group would target the nation’s capital after its attacks in Paris.

Libby Roof, a district spokeswoman, said 74 students plus chaperons and teachers from the Dent Middle’s TLC Magnet Group were scheduled to visit Washington from Nov. 17 to Nov. 20. Fifty-two 52 students plus chaperons and parents from Summit Parkway Middle’s SIDI Magnet Group also were scheduled to visit during the same time period.

Roof said the district has received an overall positive response from parents who said they appreciated the schools taking into account student safety.

“We feel it is in the best interest for everyone to have peace of mind while we attempt to reschedule the trip during a time with less safety concerns and uncertainty,” Roof said in a statement.
