A riverfront development proposal in West Columbia picked up an endorsement Friday from a key business group.

Leaders of the Cayce-West Columbia Chamber of Commerce expressed support for a mix of apartments, condominiums, stores, restaurants and offices on a 4-acre site overlooking the Congaree River.

Their backing comes as West Columbia City Council prepares to decide on the final approval of the project.

The project will “enhance the Riverwalk experience” and spur further redevelopment in the area, the group said in a statement.

Nearby residents are seeking last-minute changes in the plan to prevent what they say could be traffic and parking problems spilling into their streets.
