Pedestrian dead after collision with cement truck
The Columbia Police Department is investigating a fatal wreck involving a pedestrian and a cement truck Thursday morning.
Alexandre J. Zwolensky, 30, was using a crosswalk on Elmwood Avenue at the intersection of Main Street around 8:30 a.m. when a cement truck made a right turn, striking him, according to a news release from the department.
Zwolensky, of Taylor Street, was transported by EMS to Palmetto Health Richland and was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 9:09 a.m., according to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.
Watts said he died from blunt force trauma to the head and torso.
The department’s Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the wreck and is reviewing surveillance video near the scene.
Officers are consulting with the solicitor’s office to determine if charges will be filed against the drive.
