Federal court seizes websites for selling counterfeit, misbranded drugs
A federal court ordered the seizure of dozens of website domains officials believe are involved in the smuggling and selling of misbranded and counterfeit prescription drugs.
U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles announced special agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Investigations executed seizure orders against 67 commercial website domain names, according to a news release from Nettles’ office.
The websites allegedly engaged in the illegal sale and distribution of counterfeit and prescription drugs. The domains are in the custody of the federal government, and banners will notify website visitors of the violations against federal laws.
The release state domain names are subject to forfeiture under federal forfeiture laws. People interested in the seized domain names can file a petition with a federal court.
The domain names become U.S. government property if no petitions or claims are filed.
Nettles said generic versions of these prescription drugs are not approved by the Food and Drug administration and are illegal. He said purchasing pharmaceutical drugs from these websites comes with significant risks.
“To be safe and effective, prescription drugs must be taken under the care and supervision of appropriate health care professionals; not purchased off the internet from unknown and unregulated foreign sources,” Nettles said.
