Lexington County charged a deputy with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department with third degree domestic violence on Wednesday, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

William Carlson, 32, was taken into custody after deputies responded to his home near Red Bank around 8 a.m. following an altercation with his wife. Investigators decided that Carlson was “the primary aggressor,” in the incident, the release stated.

Carlson, the arrest warrant stated, assaulted his wife of 7 months by pushing her, placing her in a headlock and forcing her to the ground.

Carlson’s wife had injuries consistent with an assault, the responding deputies said. She suffered an injury to her leg when it struck a table during the incident, redness to the left side of her face, skin abrasions on both sides of her neck and a bruise on her leg, the warrant stated.

The deputy was terminated by Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott on Wednesday morning, said Curtis Wilson, a spokesman for the sheriff’s department.

Carlson’s bond was set at $5,000.
