Car in fatal Myrtle Beach crash chased by Surfside Beach police

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that occurred early Tuesday following a vehicle chase in Surfside Beach.

Sgt. Bob Beres said the crash was on Kings Highway near Sea Gate Village at 3:55 a.m. when a 1981 Datsun traveling north went off the roadway, overturned multiple times and ejected the driver.

Robin Miller, 45, of Florahome, Fla. died at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center at 12:30 p.m., said Horry County Chief Deupty Coroner, Tamara Willard.

About 15 minutes before the crash, Surfside Beach Police Chief Rodney Keziah said an officer saw the Datsun traveling more than 70 mph in the 45 mph zone on U.S. 17 Business and was swerving between both northbound lanes.

Keziah said police attempted to stop the car near 13th Avenue North, but the driver accelerated.

Surfside Beach police lost sight of the car north of S.C. 544. A witness informed an officer about the crash, Keziah said.

Beres said the crash remains under investigation.

Keziah said the pursuit by the officer will be reviewed internally to see if policies were followed. The review is a standard procedure in such cases, he said.
