Columbia man arrested in fatal Lexington Co. shooting

Lexington County Sheriff’s deputies say a 20-year-old Columbia man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occured in a bar parking lot in February.
Detectives arrested Gregory Lamont Brooks on arrest warrants, which include charges of murder, unlawful possession of a handgun by a person convicted of a violent crime that is a felony and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
Brooks is accused of fatally shooting Brandon E. Ratliff, 31, also of Columbia, with a handgun during a verbal argument in the parking lot of the Cockpit Bar & Grill at 214 Berryhill Road around 5:50 a.m. February 2, according to Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts.
Arrest warrants allege that Brooks was convicted of a violent crime that is a felony and violated South Carolina law by unlawfully possessing a handgun the he used when he fatally shot Ratliff, Metts said.
“Brooks fatally shot Ratliff while Ratliff tried to mediate a dispute that involved Brooks and several other people outside the Berryhill Road bar,” Metts said.
Metts said Ratliff was shot once in the upper body. He was transported to the Lexington Medical Center in a privately-owned vehicle where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives say they are investigating the nature of the dispute.
