Richland deputies arrest man after high-speed motorcycle chase

A Columbia man is charged with reckless driving, unlawful carrying of a pistol and failure to stop for blue lights and siren after leading Richland County deputies on a high-speed chase and losing control of his motorcycle early Saturday morning.

Derrick Sumter, 36, of 244 Curvewood Road, was arrested after crashing his motorcycle into a mailbox just before 3 a.m. Saturday, according to the Richland County Sheriff's Department.

A deputy on patrol had seen him driving his motorcycle recklessly and at a high speed along Clemson Road and attempted to stop him before Sumter attempted to elude the officer. Sumter then lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a mailbox at the intersection of Curvewood Road and Sumter Terrace, according to the sheriff's department.

Sumter did not have a concealed weapons permit for a handgun found in his possession, according to the sheriff's department.

He suffered non-life-threatening injuries from the crash and is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
