Camden police searching for suspect after fatal Sunday night shooting
Camden police are searching for possible one or multiple suspects involved in a shooting that occurred Sunday evening that left one Camden man dead.
An incident report filed with the Camden Police Department said officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 800 block of 18th Street off Gordon Street in Camden. The report said when the officer arrived he saw 24-year-old Sammie Cornelius Stewart laying in the roadway next to his vehicle, which had the driver’s door open.
The report said when the officer began to ask Stewart what happened, Stewart only provided his name but would not give any further details or description of what happened. He was transported to a local hospital to receive treatment for his wounds, but later died, according to Chief Joe Floyd.
While processing the scene, officers found a marijuana cigarette inside of Stewart’s vehicle as well as two cell phones. Officers also collected one shell casing from the roadway next to the vehicle, the report said.
Floyd said he has requested the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s assistance in the investigation, and an autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday in Newberry County.
Anyone who has information regarding the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1 (888)-CRIME-SC or the Camden Police Department at (803) 425-6025.
