Body of ‘younger man’ found in Columbia park, Richland County Coroner says

There was a large law enforcement presence at a downtown Columbia park Thursday morning after a body was discovered.

The body was found in Maxcy Gregg Park around 9 a.m., the Columbia Police Department said on Twitter.

That’s in the 1800 block of Blossom Street, less than a mile from the Five Points area and near the University of South Carolina.

There are no “immediate signs of foul play,” but the death is being investigated by police and the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

The body was described as being a “younger man,” Richland County Coroner Gary Watts told The State.

The coroner said Thursday he is in the process of locating the man’s family.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed Friday, and a cause of death is expected to be determined after the examination, Watts said.
