UPDATE: Columbia shooting victim identified

Columbia police are investigating a shooting Wednesday evening that killed a man identified by Richland County coroner Gary Watts as 23-year-old James Westley Sumpter.

Jennifer Timmons, a department spokeswoman, said officers responded to the 2100 block of Slighs Avenue near Harden Street in reference to a shooting before 11 p.m. When officers arrived they located one male victim, James Westley Sumpter, who sustained a gunshot wound.

Sumpter was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined that Sumpter died of complications from a gunshot wound to the upper body.
