A Lexington County man has been sentenced to eight years in prison after he found guilty of reckless homicide Thursday.

Judge George James Jr., sentenced 62-year-old Michael Gray to prison for his involvement in the motor-vehicle death of a 15-year-old boy in December 2013, solicitor Donnie Myers said.

Myers said that on the morning of Dec. 6, 2013, Gray was traveling on Old Barnwell Road, a 45 mile per hour road, at 55 miles per hour. That was when Gray crossed the center line of the two-lane road and collided with Brandon Mayo, who was traveling to White Knoll High School for class.

Mayo was the nephew of former South Congaree Police Chief Jason Amodio.

Myers said a blood sample collected from Gray confirmed that he had the presence of legally prescribed drugs in his system.

The case was investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the 11th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, Myers said. Assistant solicitors Todd Wagoner and Robby McNair prosecuted the case.
