A man suspected of attempted murder was recaptured Sunday afternoon after escaping from law enforcement at Palmetto Health Richland just before midnight Saturday.

Tony Gilmore, 17, was found around 2 p.m. in the 4800 block of Monticello Road – still in the handcuffs he was wearing before he escaped, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Gilmore is wanted by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department on two counts of attempted murder, according to a news release. He was taken to the emergency room by the Columbia Police Department after he was the victim of a robbery in an unrelated incident, Lt. Curtis Wilson said in a release.

The Sheriff’s Department sent a deputy to the hospital after Columbia police alerted the agency to the suspect’s whereabouts. The deputy handcuffed Gilmore and escorted him out of the hospital, but the suspect broke away and fled toward Sunset Boulevard as the officer opened the patrol vehicle door, according to the news release.
