Feds sue manager of Savannah River Site for $5 million

The U.S. government is suing the company that manages the Savannah River Site, saying it has overcharged the government more than $5 million since 2008.

The lawsuit was filed Friday against Savannah River Nuclear Solutions and one of its parent companies, Fluor Federal. The lawsuit says the charges violated the companies’ contract with the Department of Energy.

The $5 million is part of more than $8 billion in reimbursements that SRNS received in reimbursements.

SRNS spokeswoman Barbara Smoak says SRNS and Fluor have been trying to settle the matter for five years. She says the companies will vigorously defend their position.

If found guilty, the companies could be ordered to pay three times the amount of the violation, plus civil penalties.
