Columbia police officer seriously injured during afternoon rush hour
A five-year veteran of the Columbia Police Department was in the intensive care unit of a local hospital Tuesday night after being struck around 6 p.m. while helping another motorist on I-126.
Officer Pete Conklin sustained the most serious injuries to his arms, said Columbia Police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons in an email. He underwent surgery earlier in the evening.
Conklin and other officers were responding to a collision and separate disabled motorist when Conklin was struck by a 2014 Honda Civic, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said late Tuesday night.
News of the accident was first reported and updated on the police department’s twitter feed.
