College freshman found dead in her dorm room at SC university, officials say
An 18-year-old Furman University student died over the weekend, according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.
Ella Carroll Whiteman was found unresponsive in her dorm room Sunday and died at the scene, the coroner’s office said in a news release.
Furman President Elizabeth Davis said that Whiteman was a freshman who lived in a single room, according to a statement shared by WSPA.
At about 7 p.m. Sunday, the coroner’s office was called to 1101 Soho Circle in Travelers Rest, according to the coroner’s office’s release. That’s Geer Hall on Furman’s Upstate South Carolina campus.
The teen from Atlanta, Georgia, was pronounced dead at 6:42 p.m. by emergency medical personnel, the coroner’s office said.
Although an autopsy was performed Monday, no manner or cause of death was announced, according to the coroner’s office. Those are expected to be determined “pending additional studies and testing,” the coroner’s office said.
Information about the specific tests, and a timetable for their results, was not available. Officials did not say if foul play was suspected in Whiteman’s death.
The teen’s death continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office, the Furman University Police Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
“Although Ella’s time as a Furman Paladin was brief, she had many friends and was a beloved member of our Furman family,” Davis said in the statement. “Losing a member of our community is never easy.”
