SC politics: Confederate flags to fly inside Fort Sumter

AP

Confederate flags will fly above the parade ground inside Fort Sumter after being removed from the fort’s outer wall following the shooting deaths of nine black parishioners at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church.

Fort Sumter National Monument Superintendent Tim Stone said Monday the flags will be part of an historical display at the fort where the Civil War began.

The display will include flags that flew over Sumter during the war and include two Union and two Confederate flags.

Stone says that as a focal point of Charleston Harbor, the only flag that should be seen flying atop the monument is the current U.S. flag.

The Confederate banners were removed from atop the monument after the white man charged in the June shootings appeared in photos holding the Confederate flag.

Haley worships at Emanuel AME

Gov. Nikki Haley has again worshipped with the congregation of Emanuel AME Church in Charleston where nine parishioners were killed during a Bible study back in June.

The governor attended Sunday services with her husband and their two children. It was a low-key visit and the governor did not address the congregation, The Post and Courier of Charleston reported.

But Bishop Richard Franklin Norris welcomed the Haley family and told the congregation he appreciated the visit and said he had never seen a governor so quickly and gracefully provide leadership.

The Haley family left the church immediately after the two-hour service. The governor had earlier attended the funerals for all nine of the Emanuel victims.

Koch, GOP events fill Haley’s schedule

Having won election twice, Nikki Haley cannot run for governor again, according to state law. But that limitation has not quelled her interest in politics. Last week, for instance, Haley traveled to three states — California, Ohio and Georgia — to attend political gatherings.

Haley’s activities last week included:

5: Political events — three over two days with a Koch Brothers-affiliated group, the Freedom Oartners, meeting in Dana Point, Calif.; and speeches to the Republican National Committee in Cleveland and a RedState gathering in Atlanta

2: Policy meetings

1 each: Celebration, with Darlington Raceway executives, of the upcoming 2015 Bojangles’ Southern 500 at the Governor’s Mansion; also, a meeting with Maj. Gen. Roger L. Cloutier Jr., commanding general of Fort Jackson; also, a media interview; also, a condolence call.

Busiest day: Wednesday, with five activities, the only day Haley went to her office, according to her staff

Slowest days: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with one activity each

Of note: Haley’s schedule listed two activities for Sunday, Aug. 2, both Freedom Partners seminars

According to her staff, Haley has no publicly announced activities scheduled for this week.
