As many as three dozen members of Congress are expected in South Carolina next month to explore the role the state has played in the fight for civil rights and to worship at the Charleston church where nine black parishioners were gunned down last year.

The Faith and Politics Institute announced Thursday that the three-day Pilgrimage to South Carolina will be in mid-March. It will be hosted by Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina; Sens. Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina; and Rep. John Lewis of Georgia.

The group will learn about the coat’s Gullah culture and visit churches in the Columbia area as well as the Orangeburg Massacre site where three students were killed during a protest of a segregated bowling alley in 1968. March 20, they’ll worship at Emanuel AME Church and discuss the impact of the shootings there.
