The Midnight Bakers in Old Town Bluffton to add bistro next door

"Vegetables, vegetables, vegetables" is all chef Robert Plantadis can say about his latest restaurant venture.

The Midnight Bakers Bistro, next door to its bakery counterpart at 14 Promenade St. in Old Town Bluffton's Promenade, will feature European-inspired cuisine "made fresh, simple, from food around here," Plantadis said. The goal is to open within a few weeks.

"April Fool's Day -- that would be a good day to open," he said.

Plantadis, a native of Antibes, France, has worked with food since he was 14, and he says vegetables are what his customers at The Midnight Bakers Bakery have been requesting.

Usually, I think, it's the other way around. If you give people too many vegetables, they start asking for dessert -- or at least for the pastries and muffins that can be found in Plantadis' French bakery.

"I never would have guessed," Plantadis said, echoing my amusement at the idea.

Dishes will include "lots of mushrooms, roasted tomatoes, beets, salades" -- with an "e," of course, because that's the French way.

In addition, Plantadis hopes to offer sweet and savory crepes prepared tableside, rotisserie chicken and possibly even leg of lamb.

If you feel you've earned a sweet treat after eating all those vegetables, Plantadis is also planning to offer evening desserts at 7 every night.

"Homemade ice cream and sorbet, for example," he said. "Baked frozen desserts, baked Alaska -- made fresh."

Plantadis said that as a chef and restaurant owner, his goal is just to give what his customers want and to have some fun.

"I was a maitre'd in many places, so I've seen a lot of how things get done," he said. "I'm now doing it my way."
