Head-on crash in Richland County kills one driver, hospitalizes another, SC cops say
One person was killed and another was injured in a head-on crash between a car and a pickup truck in Richland County, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Tuesday.
The two-vehicle collision happened Monday at about 9:30 a.m. on Shady Grove Road, according to Master Trooper David Jones. The wreck was near an Interstate 26 overpass in the Irmo area.
A 2011 Toyota Corolla was driving east on Shady Grove Road when it ran off the right side of the road, Jones said. The driver overcorrected, and when the car swerved back onto the road it crossed the center line and ran directly into a westbound 2021 Dodge truck, according to Jones.
The Toyota driver died at the scene, Jones said.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the Toyota driver after notifying the next of kin.
The man driving the Dodge was hurt and taken to an area hospital, according to Jones. Further information on his condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if either driver wore a seat belt.
Information on what caused the Toyota to originally veer off the road was not available, but the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
Through Monday, 142 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,149 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least eight people have been killed in Richland County crashes in 2022, according to DPS. There were 68 deaths there last year, DPS data shows.
