Maybe Calvin isn’t obscene after all
One of the obscure traffic laws featured in your article, “8 S.C. driving laws — or lack thereof — you may not know about,” was the state’s ban on obscene bumper stickers, and the article cited as an example a sticker depicting a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon character urinating on the car or sports logo.
Something else you might not know is that a Cherokee County magistrate dismissed a ticket issued to a driver for such a sticker in 1998, specifically holding that the sticker did not meet the legal standard for obscenity.

The State publishes a cross section of the letters we receive from South Carolinians in order to provide a forum for our community and also to allow our community to get a good look at itself, for good or bad. The letters represent the views of the letter writers, not necessarily of The State.
