Steve Spurrier told The State on Friday morning that Will Muschamp has not been hired at South Carolina, refuting a website report to the contrary.
"No, I haven't hired Will," Spurrier said. "I haven't really talked to anybody about additions (to staff)."
Asked if he'd talk to Muschamp about joining the staff, Spurrier said, "Not really."
Muschamp, who was fired after four seasons as head coach at Florida, is reportedly is out of the country this week with family.
"From what I hear, Will is going to wait for everything to settle down," Spurrier said Friday.
Muschamp is the top candidate to become the defensive coordinator at Auburn and Texas A&M, which both fired their defensive coordinators in the past few days. The Tigers fired Ellis Johnson and the Aggies released Mark Snyder.
He has received offers from both schools to become defensive coordinator, according to reports, including Auburnsports.com.
Muschamp has been mentioned as a candidate at South Carolina should Spurrier decided to replace Lorenzo Ward. Spurrier told The State earlier this week that he does not have any immediate plans to fire any of his assistants.
“All our coaches are out recruiting. All of our coaches are under contract,” he said. “Some of them may get a job somewhere else, you never know, and we’ll go from there. We are probably pretty flexible right now a little bit on the staff, but I believe that almost all of our guys will be back.”
