Clemson secures No. 1 in all three major polls
Clemson is now the nation’s top football team in the three major rankings.
The Tigers remained No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 released Sunday and climbed to the top spot in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Clemson also is ranked No. 1 by the College Football Playoff committee, which updates its ranking Tuesday night.
Clemson held off Syracuse 37-27 on Saturday. The win gave the Tigers (10-0, 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) at least 10 victories for the fifth straight season and their first 10-0 start since they won their only national championship in 1981. With 13 straight wins, the Tigers also have their longest winning streak in 34 years.
The team hosts Wake Forest this Saturday before traveling to South Carolina for the regular-season finale.
The top three of No. 1 Clemson, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Alabama is unchanged after all three won on Saturday. The Tigers have 34 first-place votes. Ohio State received 23 and Alabama has four.
No. 4 Oklahoma State is the highest ranked team from the Big 12 and Oklahoma moves up five spots to No. 7 in The Associated Press college football poll Sunday. Notre Dame is No. 5 and unbeaten Iowa moved up two spots to No. 6.
In the AP poll, Clemson received 34 first-place votes to 23 for Ohio State. Alabama got four top votes.
In the USA Today poll, Ohio State actually received more first place votes (32) than Clemson (28), but the Tigers earned more poll points overall. It’s Clemson’s first No. 1 ranking since USA Today took charge of the coaches poll in 1991.
