Academics update: Three of final six USC football newcomers set to enroll

South Carolina will welcome three football newcomers to campus next week, with the status of three others still to be finalized.

Freshmen running back A.J. Turner and defensive end Quandeski Whitlow will join Kansas safety transfer Isaiah Johnson in enrolling at USC in time for the July semester.

Turner had a late graduation date at Centreville High School in Clifton, Va., while Whitlow needed more time to wait on an ACT issue to be resolved. Johnson was cleared last week by the NCAA and will enroll as a graduate transfer.

Three more prospects are still waiting.

Safety Toure Boyd appears to be in the best shape to join the Gamecocks in time for preseason practice in August. The junior college transfer from Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., is taking summer school there and is on track to meet his academic obligations, according to a source.

Cornerback Octavis Johnson of Homerville, Ga., will likely head to prep school if he fails to qualify. He still has a chance to be cleared in time for August, according to a source.

Defensive end Devante Covington, a two-time USC signee, is still completing work at Georgia Military College and would enroll in August if he completes his requirements.
