Already bolstered by Penn State signee Neiko Robinson and Mississippi State signee Cameron Myers, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College recently added South Carolina signee Octavis Johnson.

“He’s a 6-foot-1 corner who brings some size to the corner position,” Gulf Coast coach Chad Huff said Tuesday. “He’s an athletic kid who is gifted. He brings a lot to the table for us. We’re excited about having him on board.”

Huff said Johnson could potentially factor into the return game as well.

Although he arrived to camp late, Huff said Johnson, who did not qualify at USC, will play Thursday when Gulf Coast opens its season at Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville.

Johnson prepped at Clinch County High in Homerville, Ga., and signed with South Carolina in February over offers from Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Mississippi State and Ole Miss around others.

Rivals.com rated the four-star Johnson as the No. 19 cornerback and 209th overall recruit in the 2015 class.

It was originally though that Johnson would spend the fall at Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Va., and join the Gamecocks in January if he met qualifying standards. Now at a junior college instead, Johnson will likely reclassify as a Class of 2017 prospect.
