USC vs. LSU game still a go, athletic department officials say

The LSU at South Carolina game at noon on Saturday will go on as planned, the USC athletics department said in a release on Monday.

“The game is scheduled to be played as planned,” according to the release. “All parties continue to monitor the situation and the schools and SEC office remain in communication in the aftermath of the storm and flooding in the Midlands area. Our thoughts are with the Columbia and South Carolina communities adversely affected by this tragedy.”

Meanwhile, South Carolina’s coaches were back to work in their offices adjacent to Williams-Brice Stadium on Monday and expected to gather their players there for afternoon meetings, coach Steve Spurrier told The State.

“We will get most of them over here and get the last game behind us and start getting ready for LSU,” Spurrier said. “We are not too far behind on preparation and things like that.”

The Gamecocks (2-3, 0-3 SEC) take on the No. 7 Tigers (4-0, 2-0 SEC) on Saturday at noon in Williams-Brice Stadium.

Some members of the team who were not on the travel roster for the Missouri game left Columbia over the weekend and haven’t been able to return yet, but Spurrier expected most of his players to be in attendance at Monday afternoon’s meetings.

None of the team’s coaches suffered any major damage at their homes, Spurrier said.

“I haven’t been around the terrible stuff,” Spurrier said. “I am just watching it on television, but this is a major disaster.”
