Former South Carolina assistant Steve Spurrier Jr. has joined coach Bob Stoops’ University of Oklahoma football staff in an off-the-field capacity, the school confirmed Thursday.

Spurrier Jr. is returning to Norman, where he was wide receivers coach at OU from 1999-2001. The Sooners won the 2000 national championship. He served as the co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers/recruiting coordinator this past season for the Gamecocks.

At Oklahoma he will serve in off-the-field roles as the program’s director of high school recruiting and as an offensive specialist.

“It’s great to have Steve back with us,” head coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. “He was a big part of our original staff here, was with us for three years and helped us win a national championship. He’s a very positive guy and I have great respect for the way he works and the way he relates with recruits. He’ll play a strong role in on-campus recruiting and will also serve in an offensive specialist role.”

Spurrier Jr. spent the last 11 seasons at South Carolina as the Gamecocks’ wide receivers coach.

That leaves quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus as the only member of Steve Spurrier’s old staff at USC who is still looking for a new job.
