South Pointe defensive back Steven Gilmore Jr. is holding steady with his final four of South Carolina, Louisville, Georgia and North Carolina.
Gilmore said all four are recruiting him about the same and he doesn’t have a favorite. He said from USC he talks primarily with defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson. Gilmore is planning to attend USC’s opener against NC State in Charlotte and will go to games for his other contenders as well. He is scheduled to announce Sept. 17.
▪ South Carolina landed a commitment from 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher Brett Thomas of Atlanta, the 11 commitment for the 2019 class.
Here is a scouting report on Thomas by PerfectGame from a recent performance in late July: “Thomas has an extra large frame on the mound, listed at 6-foot-5 and 220-pounds, and was recently up to 91 mph a couple of days ago during this event. He was up to 88 mph on Saturday and showed an over-the-top release point with a crossfire element to his landing foot. The combination of his arm slot and his height allow him to create excellent downhill plane to both sides of the plate when leveraged to the lower third of the strike zone. Thomas’ confidence in the curveball stood out and the 12-to-6 breaker showed consistent shape and was a good weapon.”
▪ One time Gamecocks defensive back target Mike Hughes of Garden City Community College in Kansas has joined the UCF program, according to the UCF 247 site. Hughes had hoped to join the Gamecocks this summer but did not graduate from the junior college in time to do so.
